Atelier Manferni laser cutting

Italian civil engineer and UCLA trained architect Elena Manferdini is the founder of multidisciplinary design studio Atelier Manferdini. The company explores the creative potential of laser-cutting in the fields of architecture, fashion, and product design.

Bloom is a set of laser-cut stainless steel trays that can be folded into bowls.

This laser-cut textile and fashion collection named 'Clad Cuts' is about “the sensitivity associated with revealing and concealing the body and engages the problem of creating openings on a complex surface.”

'Marletti' is an installation inspired by lace making and serves as a compelling backdrop to Manferdini’s black garments with patterned cut-outs.

The Fabric Tower is an amazing concept for a 150,000 sqft residential high-rise in China. The structure is “an articulate response to the site’s natural landscape and its minority cultures.”




Vertical garden is a gold-finished stainless steel, dynamic structure designed for a MAK Center competition.

These visual merchandising panels  has been designed for fashion label Valentino. The use of mirrored materials and laser-cut shapes create an ethereal display of shadows. The reflected light which compliment the white leather accessories and silver hardware. I think this is my favourite example, I love the light effects made by the laser-cut shapes. it's quite the same effect that you could have using photogram techniques (techniques i am exploring for my personal studio project).

Eunsuk Hur

Eunsuk Hur graduated  in 2009 from Saint Martins School of Art and Design in London with a degree in Design for Textile Futures. She experiments a new way of getting dressed or of decorating your house by proposing in a modular approach in her project Nomadic Wonderland. A system of "puzzle" which allows to assemble (according to your wish and your creativity) elements of various materials: leather, felt, wood. Eunsuk uses etching, sewing, and LASER CUTTING  techniques(among other things) to create her installations and fashion. A bag, a dress, a screen ... you can create the work you want !!

Saloukee : Jewellery made in paper

The name ‘Saloukee’ comes from its creator : Sarah Louise Kelly, who creates sculptured art jewellery made in paper.

 

She loves working with the sensitive, ephemeral nature of paper, much more than the metals which she had been traditionally trained with.  Many of the pieces include several hundred hand pressed rivets, intricate laser cutting and self taught folding techniques.

Zero waste with Mark Liu

Mark Liu create really challenging designs that use every part of the cloth. He carefully design clothes patterns where all the parts fit together perfectly like pieces of a jigsaw. When he cuts out the pieces and assembles them, there isn’t a scrap of material left over. Today in the fashion industry around 15% of each roll of fabric is wasted. Mark's design reinvent the way clothes are made and designed.

 His concept is simple to understand, but difficult to achieve: zero leftovers equals zero waste.

 

He explain ‘It took a lot of trial and error to make a zero-waste pattern work. You have to be able to visualise the 2D pattern and the 3D design at the same time, and alter the 2D pieces in your mind to fit them together like a jigsaw puzzle. You’re basically acting as both fashion designer and pattern maker at the same time.’

 

 

Here’s a close up so you can see the detail; obviously laser cutting is required for intricacy.

 

The fabric can be screen print with a custom design to incorporate the cutting design (pattern) of the garment.

 Finding inspiration in everything from a movie to architecture, Swedish textile designer Camilla Diedrich is challenging conventional ideas of what textiles should be. She is one of the first designers to structure textiles in terms of negative space by cutting holes into them using a laser. This exploration of negative space has led to the incredible transformation of a fabric's flat surfaces into richly-textured, three-dimensional forms. Her most iconic product to date is the BPL Lamp for Rotaliana which is wrapped in the Bubbly textile.

 

 Textiles are normally flat. To transform  them into a three dimensional shape, she use here the ancient japanese dyeing technique shibori.

Creation Baumann Energy Curtain

 Energy is a laser cut, three-dimensional curtain that looks more like a hanging sculpture than a fabric. It transforms light through a series of slits and ridges. Energy is a paper-like material whose construction method is mysterious but intriguing. The company Creation Baumann is sustainably minded, optimizing water management, energy consumption and the use of chemical products along every step of the textile chain.

Jill Sylvia paper cutouts

Jill Sylvia is an American artist who works with paper cutouts which are done on official sheets of various kinds. Whether it is a ledger book or balance sheets, Sylvia takes official printed works and cuts out blank spaces in fine details. The resulting pieces are delicate works that have lace like quality despite their business origins.
